The Pelican Centre was founded on the 18th day of July 2004 to provide a helping hand and a sense of security to these marginalized people.
The centre is run by a registered charitable trust consisting of 9 members from all walks of life and is managed by Rev Fr. Samson Kuriakose Meloth. Our aim is the mental fitness of the inmates and to try to bring them into the mainstream of society. Today, for many, the Centre has become the home which they craved for.
At present we have a treatment cum rehabilitation centre for the mentally challenged and a physiotherapy centre. The mentally ill found wandering in the streets, and those neglected at homes are brought to the centre and are sent to the psychiatric hospital.
On recovery, they are either sent back home or accommodated in the centre. The centre has a separate ward for male and female residents and is looked after by social workers. A full-fledged kitchen and staff look after boarding. Every social festival is a celebration in the centre where all our well-wishers join with the residents. Entertainment channels, music, and indoor and outdoor games are provided.
So far, the centre was able to rescue more than 100 homeless individuals of which more than 50 have returned home. At present, there are more than 120 inmates who are undergoing treatments.
